Job Description: Research opportunities ERCP exposure Some private hospital assisting Part time 0.8FTE, fixed term About the Role We are seeking a first or second year surgical fellow with a strong interest in both clinical practice and research. This role offers a broad clinical experience, working closely with surgical consultants, subspecialty consultants, and accredited surgical registrars in the care and management of HPB patients. St Vincent’s Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary (HPB) and Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) unit consists of 10 specialist surgeons and is accredited for post-fellowship training by both the Australian and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary (ANZHPBA) and Gastric and Oesophageal (AANZGOSA) surgical societies. This position in particular is often occupied by a 2nd year accredited trainee on the hepatobiliary training program. All of our surgeons are committed to excellence in patient care and adhere to a robust audit process. We closely monitor patient outcomes following surgery to ensure that we are achieving the best possible results for our patients and that they are consistent with international best practices. We believe in a patient-centred, multidisciplinary approach to patient care and work in close collaboration with the departments of oncology and gastroenterology. Our surgical team is supported by a cancer nurse specialist, waiting list and unit support nurse, research unit in addition to a large complement of junior medical and allied health staff. Our surgeons also offer specialist support to a number of regional centres including Bendigo, Goulburn Valley Warrnambool and Gippsland. In addition to clinical exposure, this position provides dedicated time and support for pursuing a research project in an area of your interest. This is an ideal opportunity to further both your academic and clinical development, and to prepare for sub-specialty post-fellowship training, overseas fellowship, or a future consultant position. Research role It is expected that you will undertake a research project related to HPB surgery. As a minimum requirement, it is expected that you will either present at a national level or publish in a peer-reviewed journal. An opportunity also exists to undertake a higher degree by research through the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne. Clinical role You will be primarily attached to the HPB unit. You will aid in the cover of other general surgical fellows (Colorectal, Breast/Endocrine, HPB/UGI) as required. Clinical duties will include covering both elective and emergency operating, outpatient clinics, XRAY meetings, MDT meetings and both weekend and after hours on call as rostered. You will be rostered for four days per week inclusive of dedicated research and training time. An additional opportunity exists to assist with private lists one day per week. Supervisor, training and education role Rotating roster with other accredited fellows to participate in the teaching of the SET trainees. Active role with the Pre-SET committee to enhance the training and education of junior staff Active participation in clinical improvement programs, audit and recruitment of junior surgical staff.
